Case Study
Maritime New Zealand
Maritime New Zealand is a crown entity whose role is to ensure the maritime environment is safe, secure and clean for all
its users, and that it stays that way well into the future.
Key responsibilities of Maritime New Zealand include maintaining a nationwide capability for dealing with marine oil
spills in New Zealand waters and the coordination of major aviation, land and maritime search and rescue operations in
New Zealand’s search and rescue region.
Challenge
Maritime New Zealand operates in an environment that, in common with most businesses, is subject to many conflicting and
rapid changes. A changing environment, coupled with the importance of services such as oil spill response and search and
rescue, means that Maritime New Zealand continually assesses where and how improvements could be made to the quality and
efficiency of the services it provides.
FINNZ goal was to capture Maritime New Zealand’s business requirements in relation to Marine Pollution Response,
Maritime Security and Search and Rescue incident management.
Solution
FINNZ implemented a structured approach to ensure comprehensive coverage of all business groups, the incident management
processes they follow, and their subsequent business requirements. By conducting user workshops and one-on-one reviews
we were able to compile requirements, identifying any conflicts and providing a process and requirements baseline.
Benefit
The business process and requirements baseline compiled by FINNZ enabled Maritime New Zealand to identify system and
process changes to improve the delivery of incident management services.
On the strength of our business requirements service, FINNZ has also provided Maritime New Zealand with Project
Management and IT Test Strategies
