Case Study

SITO is the Industry Training Organisation for New Zealand’s seafood industry. SITO is tasked with increasing the skills of those involved in all areas of the seafood industry. SITO does this by creating and monitoring Qualifications and skill standards to support the industry. SITO currently has approximately 4000 trainees across all sectors of the industry.

Challenge

In 2005 SITO made a decision to replace their Trainee Management System. It had become increasingly difficult for them to use and the business information it provided was not of sufficient quality for them to be able to use with surety. SITO’s legacy system was an ‘off the shelf’ product which did not align with their internal processes and was therefore difficult to use. The amount of data it held had increased to levels that made it complicated to use. It was starting to impact how SITO interacted with clients and suppliers.

FINNZ was tasked with providing a bespoke Trainee Management System which complemented SITO’s well developed processes and provided the organisation with timely and accurate data.

Solution

FINNZ designed and built a fully customised Trainee Management System using Microsoft’s .NET framework backed by SQL2005. To begin the process we documented all of SITO’s processes. We then employed a collaborative approach using SITO’s people to assist in designing a truly bespoke system. FINNZ now hosts this system and provides ongoing support and related services.

Benefit

FINNZ collaborative approach, combined with industry standard technologies and methodologies, provided SITO with a system that perfectly matched their unique requirements. The usability of the system was much greater than that of the old reducing the time spent on administrative tasks.

This project also allowed SITO the opportunity to cleanse their data. The new system and its supporting database provided certainty that data is collected and entered correctly. Having the confidence of quality data allowed SITO to begin a programme of freeing that business information to assist in strategic planning.
